Greatstone; "Greatstone" beach stretches pretty much from Dungeness power station to New Romney and beyond. It pretty much faces East so good for a North through to a Southerly. The beach has an even shallower slope than Camber, you can go a real long way out and still be only waist deep. There are no restrictions here but if you rock up at low tide you have a long walk to the water. The hazards here are; not much beach at high tide, and also in places there are metal anchors that fishermen use to tether their nets, these can stick up out of the sand. Greatstone has also has periods of silting where the beach is muddy. Speak to the locals and launch near the water. The water here can be almost flat at times, there are very small waves.
Camber Sands; Over 4 miles of beautiful sandy beach. Kitesurfing and buggying are now restricted to the Eastern end of the beach, commonly known as Jury's Gap. The beach pretty much faces South, so good in anything from East to West, although a true westerly tends to be gusty as it comes over Fairlight. Kitesurfing 2 hours either side of high tide is not recommended here as the water reaches the steep shingle bank at the top of the beach, not only does it get deep very quickly but there are also groynes to contend with. Aside from that it is a great spot with a very shallow sloping beach, this means the water stays relatively shallow for a long way out. The waves tend to be more formed on a Westerly and at times are quite big, 6' ish. The beach is forever shifting and changing from year to year, but there are usually tidal pools as the tide goes in and out, creating flat sections. The other hazards to watch out for are a sunken fishing boat that eerily emerges from the depths a couple of hours after high tide, and, if you go waaaaaaaaaaay east you'll find yourself in live round m.o.d territory. Extreme!, no seriously, stay out of the firing ranges..... Rye is 5 minutes away boasting about 17 watering holes of various merit. Camber itself is up and coming with new build properties going up, funky bars and a skatepark.
